Congratulations to the Johnston sisters for being our ballerinas of the week.
I was born and raised in Sweden where the sun hardly sets in the summer and or rises in the winter. In Scandinavia there is always something special about the light.
My childhood memories are of spending summers on an island outside of Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city, picking flowers and dancing around the mid-summer pole. Remembering the beautiful meadows with wild strawberries, loving the birch trees and listening to cookoo birds. The fall was spent looking for mushrooms in the woods while skiing and ice skating in the winter. Scandinavian people love being outdoors. In the winter, I would walk to school in the dark and come home in the dark.
When I was sixteen I moved to Stockholm where my father gave me my first camera. It was then that I became hooked and have photographed ever since. After school, I tried nursing for two years at Karolinska Hospital but after fainting at every operation, I realized that my sensitivity was not right for nursing but could maybe be used in a creative way.
I met my husband, David, while visiting the United States in New York City. He was working as a television producer and often commented that he liked my photographs. We lived in Manhattan for ten years and had two beautiful baby girls, and later moved to Connecticut where David was producing Sesame Street and I studied photography and darkroom work. I always have been intrigued by children's faces and their innocence.
I was later hired by my husband on movie sets in California to photograph many celebrities. When we moved to Virginia Beach, I opened our studio, Foto by Eva Ltd., to photograph children, babies and families, in spontaneous situations which are really my speciality. After more than twenty years of photographing children and families, I have received many awards from the Virginia Professional Photographers Association and Professional Photographers of America.
We have been very fortunate to have several commercial companies looking at our photographs of children and babies and licensing
these images for puzzles, calendars, and greeting cards. We are always aware of our client's babies for a special look to be chosen for our model file.
My Swedish roots are very strong, influenced by the Scandinavian light and clean, simples lines. That is why I have a notable style of high key photography with a white background, wrapping the subject in the clean light that makes the expression stand out on its own.
